Notes to Self

“You can’t pour from an empty cup” is an age-old maxim that I believe we can all relate to.  Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, spouse, caregiver, teacher, coach, friend, leader, provider or a combination thereof, you can’t give what you don’t have.  If you don’t give to yourself and fill your cup, then you won’t be able to lovingly give to the people in your life without feeling burned out, overloaded and potentially resentful.  The quote below has really resonated with me as a simple plan for taking care of yourself and keeping your cup full.

Treat yourself like you would treat a small child.

You would, of course, be kind to a small child and lovingly care for them, so afford yourself the same kind consideration.  Be good to yourself and treat you with same compassion you would a little one.

Feed yourself healthy food.

With the frequency of fad diets, you could sign on to a new eating scheme almost weekly.  It’s often just too boring and laborious to keep up with and let’s be real here, food is one of life’s great pleasures.  So, in the category of being good to yourself, eat healthy food, mostly food that grows out of the ground not made in a factory.

Make sure you spend time outside.

Being outside can improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.  Time outdoors has been linked to improved creativity and mental clarity.  It helps you live a longer, healthier and happier life.  Even a few minutes of fresh air is good for the mind and soul.

Put yourself to bed early.

Put your phone/tablet away, turn off the TV and go to bed.  That sounds simple enough, but if you struggle with sleep, you’re not alone.  More than 50 million Americans suffer from over 80 different sleep disorders and another 20-30 million suffer intermittent sleep problems.  Sleep is one of the most important components of a healthy lifestyle and not getting enough of it has serious effects on our brains and bodies and puts us at higher risk for a host of diseases including cancer.  ReSet is proud to offer NuCalm: one of the most innovative systems available for relaxation and rest.  NuCalm quiets the mind and prepares your brain and body for restorative sleep.  So, let us help you get a better night’s sleep and put yourself to bed early.

Let yourself take naps.

Take naps when you need to.  Listen to your body and give it the rest it needs.  A NuCalm power nap is the perfect way to rest and be good to yourself in the same bundle.  NuCalm is just a 20-minute session that may give you the benefits equivalent to 2 hours of restorative sleep and will leave you feeling refreshed and re-energized.

Don’t say mean things to yourself.

Stop all the negative self-talk and celebrate how amazing you are.  We are often juggling many different responsibilities and holding ourselves to an unrealistic standard.  Soften your inner critic, be reasonable with what you’re asking of a single human being (YOU) and keep the tone of your self talk warm and loving.  You wouldn’t speak harshly to a small child so don’t speak harshly to yourself.

Don’t put yourself in danger.

Be safe out in the world.  Simple things: don’t text and drive, be aware of your surroundings, wear your seatbelt, follow safety warnings, be safe online, make sure you have working smoke detectors in your home… all simple things to keep out of harms way.

Keeping your cup full starts with you taking care of yourself, treating yourself with love and compassion in order to live your best life.  At ReSet Lounge, we’ve created a place to help you care for yourself and keep your cup full.  Come see us!
