gut health and detoxifying

Many wellness industry discussions center around gut health, detoxification, and keeping forever chemicals and other environmental toxins away. This makes for many ideas around detox protocols.

Detoxifying is great--but did you know if you don’t prepare your body to expel the toxins you are trying to rid yourself of you can do harm? Binders can enhance and support you while detoxing and we suggest introducing them before or along with any detox protocols.

What are Binders?

We often use the analogy of fly paper when discussing binders; it helps you envision something in your gut that grabs the pesky irritants so you can dump them. These binders can come from food sources or supplements, helping to detoxify your body effectively.

Food sources to help bind toxins

Herbs and other foods have been longtime remedies for binding toxins and supporting health. Studies have shown that insoluble fiber can help bind mycotoxins (mold/fungi-related toxins) in the gut. These foods include:

  • Whole grains
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, radish and collard greens)
  • Fruit skin

Herbs can also help! Here are 5 herbs that Jennifer, ReSet Lounge's Naturopath, commonly recommends for detoxification. Many are common ingredients found in a detox tea readily available in most grocery stores:

  1. Elecampane (root): Supports lungs and liver
  2. Dandelion (leaves and root): Stimulates/supports digestion and liver
  3. Milk Thistle: Increases production of bile, which not only stimulates the liver, but also protects it
  4. Ginger: Stimulates blood/circulation and supports digestion
  5. Nettle: Known as the “Mother of Spring Tonics”, traditionally for skin support, it also supports whole-body, as well as joint, health
    • Nettle is great to use when your body feels "stagnant" especially after winter and moving into spring!

Common Binder Supplements

Activated charcoal is often used as a binder and is widely available in most pharmacies. At ReSet Lounge, your Chagrin Falls Spa, we stock some Cellcore products that we like for various uses:

  • The “BioToxin Binder” product supports the microbiome of the gut and promotes the body’s natural ability to detoxify.
  • Another popular product is the ViRadChem Binder. This product supports cellular repair and the body’s natural ability to detoxify environmental and microbial contaminants.

Mind your funnel!

Cellcore has a great graphic to show how your body works to eliminate toxins.

You need to make sure your body is draining (i.e. bowel movements) before starting the detoxification process. If you are constipated, it is not advisable to go into a full-blown detoxification program or you may feel pretty crummy, and toxins may actually reabsorb into your system.

Castor Oil packs or CellCore's Bowel Mover can help get you prepared and we also have them stocked at ReSet Lounge.

ReSet Services that support detoxification

Interested in supporting a detox process in your body? We have some services that can help.

Medical Grade Compression Massage Chairs and Therapeutic Massage: Massage not only feels great, but it helps dissolve and eliminate toxins through the physical stimulation of body tissues.

Red Light Therapy: Our largest organ is the skin, and it is a detox pathway for the body.  Among many great benefits, Red Light Therapy boosts melatonin production, which in turn supports glutathione in the body. All of this equates to more efficient detoxification.
