All About Infrared

The infrared spectrum consists of near (NIR), mid (MIR), and far (FIR) waves, each with distinct characteristics and frequency ranges. It’s impossible to deliver these three peak wavelengths at one time from a single source. That’s why our saunas have  a unique technology that combines three heating elements in one sauna heater.

Near Infrared

Near infrared (NIR) is the shortest infrared wavelength and penetrates the skin’s surface more effectively than the other two. Scientific research shows that when delivered at the vital wavelength of 880nm without extreme heat or light, NIR promotes skin renewal, cell health, wound healing, and tissue growth.

NIR heaters consisting of high-wattage halogen bulbs at extremely high temperatures are not comfortable or beneficial. In order to make NIR heat safe for saunas, we used NASA research to develop a patented LED array that provides NIR at a singular wavelength with minimal variability and virtually undetectable heat and light.

LEDs are effective because they can trigger a natural photo-biochemical reaction (similar to how plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into plant tissue). Research from Dr. Harry Whelan, it takes a specific joule of NIR energy to deliver the wavelength needed to penetrate human tissue.

Mid Infrared

Mid infrared (MIR) is a longer wavelength that can penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue where inflammation occurs. MIR helps expand blood vessels and increases circulation, so more oxygen can reach injured areas of the body. This reduces pain and speeds the healing process. View 3-in-1 study on pain relief.

To produce MIR, sauna heaters must be able to maintain a surface temperature of 250⁰C. Though many sauna companies claim to provide full spectrum, the polypropylene material used in their heaters actually melts at the high temperature required for MIR. We worked with engineers and scientists to overcome this obstacle by using a higher quality product – DuPont’s Kapton® polyimide film—a high tech material made to tolerate the high heat required to produce MIR. Plus, since our full spectrum heaters are made up of three distinct heating elements, the MIR layer can be heated independently to a higher temperature than the FIR layer.

Far Infrared

The longest wavelength, far infrared (FIR), reaches deepest into the body, where toxins are stored. By raising your core body temperature, FIR stimulates the sweat glands, resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat that leaves you feeling revitalized. Plus, since sweating increases heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate, you’re also burning calories.

We already achieved the most effective far infrared heater with our highly emissive Solocarbon heater coating . We’ve applied that same coating to our polyimide panel and discovered this application makes it 99% emissive! This is why Solocarbon panels are the only far infrared heaters clinically shown to raise core body temperature nearly 3° for the most detoxifying sweat, lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure and aid in weight loss.

Chromotherapy (Light Therapy)

Chromotherapy is the science of using colors to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in health and harmony.  Light therapy has been valued throughout history as a remarkable source of healing. Each color possesses frequencies of a specific vibration, and each vibration is related to a different physical symptom. Our saunas come equipped with this option at no extra cost.

When visiting ReSet Lounge, chromotherapy is offered as an additional benefit with our infrared saunas and with our salt cabin (halotherapy).

Red is believed to increase the pulse, raise blood pressure and increase the rate of breathing. Red would be applied to support circulatory and nervous functions.

Strong Pink
Strong pink acts as a cleanser, strengthening veins and arteries.

Pink activates and eliminates impurities in the blood stream.

Orange is a mixture of red and yellow. Activates and eliminates localized fat. Assists with asthma and bronchitis

Strong Yellow
Strong yellow strengthens the body and activates internal tissues.

Yellow, the brightest color used in chromotherapy, has been used to purify the skin, help with indigestion, strengthen the nervous system, treat glandular diseases, hepatitis and lymphatic disorders and assist metabolism.

Green, a color associated with harmony, provides a neutral, positive calming effect.

Strong Green
Strong green provides anti-infectious, anti-septic and regenerative stimulation.

Strong Blue
Strong blue lubricates joints, helps address stress, nervous tension and infections.

Blue promotes relaxation and calm. Blue exhibits tranquilizing qualities often used to relieve headaches and migraines, colds, stress, nervous tension, rheumatism, stomach pains, muscle cramps and liver disorders. Blue is thought to have a positive effect on all kinds of pain.

Indigo is used to address conditions involving the eyes, ears and nose. It has a calming, sedative effect.

Violet is used to calm the nervous system, soothe organs and relax muscles. Violet has meditative qualities and is often used to treat conditions of the lymphatic system and spleen, as well as urinary disorders and psychosis.

Sweating is one of the body’s safest and most natural ways to heal and maintain good health.  Infrared sauna generates a sweat 7x more detoxifying to help your body rid itself of accumulated, highly toxic metals (lead, nickel and cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sulfuric acid and other inorganic compounds. As the world moves toward more natural and self-directed treatments, sauna detoxification is getting more and more attention.

Increased Metabolism

According to the Journal of American Medical Association, regular use of sauna imparts a similar boost on the cardiovascular system to running. As you relax in the gentle infrared heat, your body is hard at work to increase sweat production to cool itself, pumping blood to improve circulation, and increasing metabolism to burn calories.  This increase in your basal metabolic rate should burn calories at a heightened rate for hours after your session has ended.

Heart Health

During a sauna session, your core body temperature rises, prompting the blood vessels in your body to dilate. This expansion, referred to as “vasodilation”, triggers a physiological response that includes an increase in heart rate, metabolic rate and cardiac output. Blood vessels become more pliable and elastic from continual contraction and expansion as they are heated and cooled, and the increased demand for oxygen in your muscles prompts an increase in heart rate, stimulating the heart to become more efficient at pumping oxygenated blood throughout the body.

Skin Purification & Rejuvenation

Increased blood circulation has also been shown to aid in the recovery of acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns and open wounds. Infrared also stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles, heal scars and improve overall skin tone. The elevated blood flow boosts the delivery of nutrients to your skin resulting in clearer, softer, and healthier looking skin.

Pain Relief

Infrared heat increases circulation and penetrates tissue, joints, and muscles, increasing circulation and speeding oxygen flow to relieve pain stemming from overuse, strain, repetitive motion, aging and chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia.

In just a few minutes the gentle warmth of an infrared sauna will help you feel relaxed, rejuvenated, and renewed.  Your body's level of cortisol, your body's primary stress hormone is balanced, and serotonin, a powerful hormone associated with relaxation and sleep, is increased. Following a sauna session, people show more brain waves related to deeper, more restful sleep.

Strengthened Immune System

The heat generated by an infrared sauna stimulates energy at a cellular level, like a fever, which, in turn, increases the body’s production of white blood cells. These cells form a component of your blood and act as your immune system’s first line of defense when infection strikes. This enhanced immune system, combined with improved elimination of toxins and wastes via intense sweating, increases your overall health and resistance to disease.
